Blog #1 - Senior Final Lesson/Interview Reflection

1.  What three lessons were most helpful for you to see, and why?
Jessica Castillo - Veterinary Medicine
In her presentation, she seemed very relaxed and very informed about her topic. What really helped me the most was that she listed all the places she volunteered at and referenced a book that helped her for her presentation. She really gave me the whole basics of what my presentation could be like next year. I liked how after her activities and slides, she had one more activity that summed up all the general vet information she just went over. It showed how much you were really paying attention.
Adriane Parale - Nursing
Adriane's presentation was probably one of most interactive of the ones I've been to. One of her activities was to actually dress up a nurse with the paper attire, masks, and gloves. It was very interesting and it gave the audience the opportunity to stand up, laugh, and experience how a nurse would dress with that sort of attire. Adriane also had another interactive activity where she gave her audience lotion to symbolize how much we actually clean our hands. With a black light, the lotion glowed and showed up which parts of our hand was "cleaned" and the parts that weren't. I'm hoping for my senior presentation I will be able to be that interactive with my audience.
Aubree Amano - Dog Training
The whole set up in Aubree's presentation was very clean and cute. What I really loved was her first activity was a ice breaker with a little gift bag that related to her topic and at the end her last activity had the juniors and the seniors get to know each other with a one on one activity. After she chose one group to have a little quiz and gave a whole gift basket to the winner. She had multiple props, references, and interactive activities as well. Her presentation really gave me inspiration of  how mine could possibly be next year.
2. List one thing that you learned about the senior project in interviews that will help you get off to a good start?
From the senior interviews what I really got was that it was as stressful as I made it seem to be. If it's something that I really am interested and passionate about it wouldn't even be a presentation, it would me sharing my experiences and knowledge about something I really enjoyed doing over the course of the year. I was really scared about the timing of the presentation, but after the interviews I'm more confident that I will make time and have a decent presentation.
3. What topic(s) are you considering, and why?
Veterinary Medicine
As a cliche, I've always been in love with animals since I was a little. I figured why not be with animals and make a great income at the same time. I pretty much only look at colleges with an Animal Science major so I think having the experience to mentor and have so many hours with a veterinarian will be so helpful for me. I'm hoping that if I get to mentor a veterinarian, it would show me that I really want to choose this as my career path.
No-Kill Shelters
Even though I wouldn't be helping the animals medically, I would be helping them find a home and keeping them healthy off the streets. I very much hope to start volunteering at a no-kill shelter as an Independent Component or even as my Senior Topic. Either way I would feel like I'm personally helping animals.
4. What EQ do you think might be interesting to consider in guiding a project like this? (Please don't worry about any sort of formula...we want this question to come from your genuine interest).
Veterinary Medicine: What are the best steps to keep your pet as healthy as possible?
5. What are some ideas you have about finding summer mentorship?
I plan to call as many animal hospitals or no-kill shelters in my area. I even hope to visit the animal hospitals and shelters to see if I would enjoy working there in the environment and with the workers there.
